"This meet was a very competitive one for the team," Nick Montoya, Mesquite Manta Rays swim team coach said about the Cedar City, UT championships held July 27 and 28. Around 45 kids traveled to the swim meet.

"The kids did great and improved tremendously. We had some first year swimmers place in the top 8 in their events and some events had 6-7 heats with around 56 swimmers in some,"Montoya explained.

"Cameron Rivera was the youngest person there at age 4 and he placed in the top 8. Jamie Hulet showed in the top 8 in three events in the championships. Kurt Felix took two Gold medals and a Bronze medal for his first year efforts. That's a great accomplishment. He was excited and was having a great time at the event," he added.

"In the relays, we had a team of swimmers in the Girls 9-10 year old Medley Relay. Three of them are first year swimmers in the program and they finished in the top 8 and they are the youngest team in their class all 9 and one 8 year old; Alayna Felix, Jamie Hulet, Zoey Tobler and Amy Stenberg.

"The Boys 11-12 200 Yard Medley Relay was very exciting as they all stepped up to help out the team and we had, Ronald Nichols age 9, Hiram Rivera age 9, and Javen Laub age 8 swam with Juan Jaiden age 11, so he could compete in the event. The team took 6th place in the finals," Montoya explained.

"It was great to see the kids compete on this type of scale. It was exciting for them and for us to see their faces when their names were announced as they took the starting blocks for the finals."

The team will be heading to Hurricane, UT, Aug 3 and 4 for the Beat the Heat swim meet.
