One month they’re up, the next month they’re down. That’s the nature of building permits issued by the City of Mesquite over the last six months. However, permits hit a high in June that hasn’t been seen in over a year.
The total value of building permits issued in June came in at a whopping $4,777,020. Of that, $4.5 million were categorized as new single family homes.

Single Family Residences
Almost all the permits in this category were due to Pulte Del Webb pulling 26 permits for homes in Sun City Mesquite. The surge comes after the developer took out only six permits in May and only three permits in April. Three other permits were issued to the NRC construction company in June.
Only four of the single family home permits were valued at over $200,000. Out of the 29 permits, 17 of them were for homes priced at $150,000 or below.

Residential Modifications
Building permits in this category continued to mirror the typical monthly trend, except for April. And, continuing the same situation as in past months, all five permits were issued to Southwest Awnings.

Commercial Modifications
Permits for commercial modifications saw the highest number of permits issued this year at eight. The value of those permits, $184,440, was also the highest since last October. However, one permit for the Mesquite Library renovation work at 121 W. First North St, accounted for the bulk of the valuation at $159,840.

Monthly Comparisons
Having so many building permits taken at one time by a single homebuilder naturally skews the numbers and doesn’t lend much to a yearly comparison. The same goes for the single commercial modification permit issued for the Mesquite Library renovation worth most of the total in that category.
It does do wonders to boost the overall yearly numbers, bringing the total value of building permits issued so far in calendar year 2012 to just over $15 million. That compares to the June 2011 total of $11.5 million.
The total number of permits issued so far this year is 239 compared to 264 at this time last year.

Business Licenses
The Business License Department issued 19 new licenses in June with 10 of them registered to out-of-town companies. That’s down from the 26 business licenses issued in May. There were 15 business licenses revoked, all of them categorized as “no longer in business, customer request.” Only five business licenses were revoked in May, all for the same reason. |
