MMGA - Bubba Loves Coral Canyon
Posting Date: 06/01/2012

The phrase “first time is a charm” was certainly true today at Coral Canyons for Bubba Petrick. The Mesquite Amateur “drove” the MMGA to St. George for the week and Coral Canyon was the first stop on Tuesday. Petrick was spot on for his first look at this course shooting a three over par on the front and a great one under par on the back side for a decent 74 and low medalist. Two shots behind were Paul LeVan (79) and Frank Thomasino (79). Three players tied for low net. Tom Durenberger (82), Terry Gardner (86) and LeVan. Durenberger took first place with a par on the number one handicap hole while LeVan earned second with a bogey and Gardner’s triple bogey regretfully dropped him to third.

The MMGA finished their short road trip to St George today playing at Sky Mt. in Hurricane, Utah. For the first time in nine years that the MMGA has played Sky Mt., the winds finally blew. It didn’t seem to bother Paul LeVan, at

least not on his finishing round. He only had one birdie on the front side for a not impressive nine holes of 44. But he lit up the back side starting with an eagle on #10 and followed that with a birdie on #11 to start the back side three under. He would add another birdie on 17 to finish out a one under 35 on the back and a total 79 for medalist honors. Two shots back was Sesame Street’s “Big Bird" Bubba Petrick with a steady 81. Petrick’s 81 gave him a net 71 and first place low net. Two shots back was Jim Smith (88) and net 73. Ben Bishop (87) filled in the last spot with his net 74.

APERCU’S: LeVan also had the shot and hole of the day. His 24 foot putt on #10 dropped in for a very sweet eagle. All elements considered, Paul, that was a fine round.

NOTE: Next week play is on Tuesday June 3, at 7:00 at Falcon Ridge, and Thursday June 7th at the Canyons at 7:00. Always check your sign - up sheets, and or our website, for any changes. Anyone interested in the MMGA may call 346-6363 or visit our website at
