North Schell Fire 37 Percent Contained

A wildfire burning in steep, rugged terrain on the east side of the Schell Mountain Range, 20 miles northeast of Ely, NV, is approximately 37 percent contained, according to officials with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ely District.

The fire, which began June 9 as a Forest Service prescribed burn, has consumed approximately 11,500 acres in steep rugged terrain. It is burning white fir, mountain mahogany, pinion-pine, juniper, grass, understory and sagebrush.

Full containment of the wildfire is expected by July 4. A red flag warning will be in effect today, June 21, for high winds.

State Route 893 in the area is open to the public, but motorists are encouraged to remain out of the fire area. Kalamazoo Road remains closed until further notice.
