After a protracted discussion about the merits of doing yet another study to determine how much water is in Basin 222, the Virgin Valley Water District Board of Directors voted 4-1 at it May 17 meeting to allow General Manager Ken Rock to work with the U.S. Geology Service and the Nevada State Engineer in the Division of Water Resources to determine the feasibility of another survey of available water. Board member Ted Miller was the lone nay vote.
"The reason for my being here is to see if our office finds value in additional studies of the groundwater availability in Basin 222," remarked Jason King, the Nevada State Water Engineer. "Right now, we have a 1969 recon [reconnaissance] report that estimates perennial yield in the basin at 3,600 acre feet of water. Our office throughout the years, has issued water rights up to about 12,200 acre feet."

Conventional wisdom believes that trying to get the government or any large agency to do something is a useless task most often characterized by the agency asking for people's participation, then saying, “thanks for the input, now good-by,” with nothing ever being done.
Not so for the Eureka Casino Hotel and its management team, Greg Lee and Andre Carrier. In late March, they held several focus groups at the Eureka Casino to answer the question “what kind of community do we want to live in here?” The question was prompted, in part, and brought to the attention of Lee and Carrier by members of the community who felt that over the past few years it was hard to get anything done in Mesquite. "I think it's the duty of every civil servant to provide the best level of customer service possible," remarked the new Mesquite City Manager Andy Barton in a recent interview with the Mesquite Citizen Journal.
Even after losing 31 positions in city government over the last few years, Barton believes Mesquite residents still deserve that. "I believe that the more people that participate in the public process, the better the decision making process is."
Typically he believes in an open door policy saying, "no one needs an appointment to see me. If they want to stop by City Hall at anytime to talk to me, I'm available for that. I'm more than happy to listen. I can't give everyone what they want all the time. But I promise if people have an issue, they will be heard. I will do my best to get an answer to them as quickly as possible." [Read more]
