A plan to demolish an eyesore on Sandhill Blvd was rejected by the Mesquite Redevelopment Agency (RDA) Board Tuesday, March 26 after several members objected to using taxpayer dollars to improve private property.
Originally, the demolition costs of approximately $16,000 would have been covered completely by the City of Mesquite. A lien would have been placed on the property as a way to recoup the money which could have been years down the road.
The issue was presented to the RDA Board, comprised of the Mesquite mayor and five councilmen. However, rather than the City covering all the costs, the property owner proposed a 50-50 split without any liens on the property deed. The City's share of the demolition costs, approximately $8,000, would be taken from the RDA fund rather than the General Fund.
